Effective protection for linear technology and rolling bearings - PICARD

BVS as a driver of logistics innovation at Picard - process optimization for maximum efficiency and increased capacity

Picard is one of the largest trading companies for rolling bearings, linear technology and related products in Europe. With over 100 years of experience, the company offers an extensive range of high-quality products and supplies the technical trade worldwide. Through strategic partnerships and short delivery times, Picard guarantees its customers high availability and quality.

Initial situation

In 2017, the packaging situation was characterized by four individual packaging lines with five work steps. The use of bottom-lid cartons required considerable preparation time, which slowed down the entire process. The filling material consisted mainly of chips and the average parcel volume was 720 boxes per day. At the beginning of 2018, the parcel volume increased to an average of 815 boxes per day, which further increased the pressure on the existing processes and called for solutions to increase efficiency.

Solution

The challenge was to develop a new packaging and shipping concept in a confined space that would significantly speed up the processes. The aim was to handle a higher parcel volume, improve ergonomics and processes and involve fewer employees in the process. The system had to be able to efficiently process very different parcels - from 10 g to 70 kg. Particularly between 4 and 9 pm, when 75 % of the daily volume (approx. 600 cartons) is processed, process reliability was to be increased by scanning the shipping label.

Result

2018:

  • 4 double packing tables with lifting unit and integrated scales
  • Automatic conveyor line to the central filling and gluing machine
  • Automatic detection of the shipping service provider with ejection to the appropriate lane
  • Buffer line for customs orders and changing from cardboard to Fefco 0201 in top quality as well as changing from filling material to paper

2019

  • Addition of 2 further double packing tables to increase capacity
  • Introduction of a change of direction in conveyor technology for more efficient separation
  • Installation of an additional filling and gluing station to increase the process speed
  • Integration into the sorting and allocation process according to shipping service providers and shortening of the customs route through modified clearance

Packaging - As much as necessary,
as little as possible

BVS uses the NaturePak label for products that enable ecologically sound use, reduce CO2 emissions and generate less waste, regardless of the packaging material used.

Our strategy

  • Less packaging means less waste
  • Better protection through high quality
  • Packaging materials made from recycled raw materials or equivalent proportions
  • Economical packaging systems reduce material and energy consumption
  • Ecological customer solutions regardless of material
  • Objective information about different packaging materials

Packaging made from recycled paper

Paper pays off for people and the environment in the long term. It is even better to use paper with a high recycled content. Recycled paper optimizes water and energy consumption and thus protects the environment and climate by reducing waste. Recycled paper offers a wide range of added value for all users.

  • Protects the environment and reduces CO2 emissions
  • Saves energy and water
  • Less waste through optimal recycling

Plastic packaging with recycled content

Polyethylene films are increasingly being produced with a proportion of recycled material, which - as far as technically possible - is being continuously increased. They are the most modern and safest quality packaging for all branches of industry. Due to their low density and excellent physical and mechanical properties, PE films have major advantages over paper, cardboard, metal and glass.

  • Protects the environment and reduces CO2 emissions
  • Can be recycled again and again
  • Is a lightweight material with a high protective effect
  • Significantly reduces food waste when used in the food industry
  • Generates much less waste than glass, metal or paper
